Indirect Questions คืออะไร ต่างจากคำถามปกติอย่างไร
Indirect Question หรือ คำถามทางอ้อม คือการถามคำถามโดยแฝงไว้ภายในประโยคอื่นที่สุภาพกว่า เช่นขึ้นต้นด้วย "Could you tell me...", "Do you know...", "I wonder if...", "I'd like to know..." จุดสำคัญที่สุดของ Indirect Question คือ ส่วนคำถามที่ซ่อนอยู่ข้างในจะเรียงคำแบบประโยคบอกเล่าปกติ (Subject + Verb) ไม่มีการสลับตำแหน่งประธานกับกริยาช่วยเหมือนคำถามตรง (Direct Question)
พูดสั้น ๆ: Direct Question ถามตรง ๆ ด้วยการสลับโครงสร้าง ส่วน Indirect Question ใช้ประโยคนำ (introductory phrase) แล้วตามด้วยโครงสร้างประโยคบอกเล่าปกติ ทำให้ฟังดูสุภาพและอ่อนน้อมกว่า
โครงสร้างของ Indirect Questions
สูตร: [Introductory Phrase] + [Question word/if/whether] + Subject + Verb (เรียงแบบประโยคบอกเล่า)
| Direct Question (คำถามตรง) | Indirect Question (คำถามทางอ้อม) |
|---|---|
| Where is the station? | Could you tell me where the station is? |
| What time is it? | Do you know what time it is? |
| Does she work here? | I wonder if she works here. |
| Did he call you? | Can you tell me whether he called you? |
| How much does it cost? | I'd like to know how much it costs. |
|---|---|---|
| Could you tell me...? | สุภาพมาก | Could you tell me where the restroom is? |
| Do you know...? | สุภาพทั่วไป | Do you know what time the shop closes? |
| I wonder if... / I was wondering if... | สุภาพ อ่อนโยน | I wonder if you could help me. |
| Would you mind telling me...? | สุภาพมากเป็นพิเศษ | Would you mind telling me how this works? |
| I'd like to know... | เป็นทางการ | I'd like to know why the flight was delayed. |
| Can you tell me...? | เป็นกันเองกว่า Could | Can you tell me how to get there? |
Yes/No Question แบบทางอ้อม: ต้องใช้ If หรือ Whether
เมื่อคำถามต้นฉบับเป็นคำถามแบบ Yes/No (ไม่มี Wh-word) ต้องเติมคำเชื่อม if หรือ whether เข้าไปแทนที่ ซึ่งเป็นจุดที่ผู้เรียนมักลืม
- Direct: Is she coming to the party?
-
Indirect: I wonder if she is coming to the party.
-
Direct: Does he speak French?
- Indirect: Do you know whether he speaks French?
Whether มักใช้ในบริบททางการมากกว่า if และสามารถตามด้วย "or not" ได้ทันที เช่น "I don't know whether or not she will come." ในขณะที่ "if" ตามด้วย "or not" จะต้องแยกไปท้ายประโยค เช่น "I don't know if she will come or not."
- คงการสลับโครงสร้างแบบคำถามตรงไว้ในส่วนที่ฝังอยู่ เช่น พูดผิดว่า "Could you tell me where is the station?" ทั้งที่ถูกต้องคือ "Could you tell me where the station is?"
- ลืมเติม if/whether ในคำถาม Yes/No เช่น พูดผิดว่า "I wonder does she like coffee." ทั้งที่ถูกต้องคือ "I wonder if she likes coffee."
- เผลอใส่เครื่องหมายคำถามซ้ำหรือคงรูป do/does/did ไว้ในประโยคย่อย เช่น พูดผิดว่า "Do you know what time does the movie start?" ทั้งที่ถูกต้องคือ "Do you know what time the movie starts?"
เคล็ดลับ: เทคนิค "ย้อนกลับเป็นประโยคบอกเล่าก่อน"
วิธีที่ได้ผลที่สุดสำหรับนักเรียนไทยคือ ฝึกคิดสองขั้นตอนเสมอ:
- แปลงคำถามตรงกลับเป็นประโยคบอกเล่าในใจก่อน เช่น "Where is the station?" → "The station is [there]."
- นำประโยคบอกเล่านั้นไปต่อท้ายวลีนำ โดยเปลี่ยนส่วนคำตอบเป็น Wh-word หรือ if/whether
เมื่อฝึกจนคล่อง จะไม่ลืมสลับโครงสร้างกลับเป็นแบบบอกเล่าอีกต่อไป และช่วยแก้ปัญหาการติดโครงสร้างคำถามตรงได้อย่างตรงจุด
Indirect Questions ในสถานการณ์ทางการ (Formal Contexts)
Where is the manager's office?
- สุภาพกว่า: Could you tell me where the manager's office is?
ตัวอย่างประโยค Indirect Questions เพิ่มเติม
- Do you know what time the train leaves?
- Could you tell me how much this shirt costs?
- I wonder if he will come to the meeting tomorrow.
- Can you tell me whether the office is open on Saturdays?
- I'd like to know why the flight was cancelled.
- Would you mind telling me where I can find the nearest pharmacy?
- Do you have any idea what this word means?
- I was wondering if you could help me with my luggage.
- Could you let me know when the results will be announced?
- Do you know who is in charge of this project?
Indirect Questions กับ Reported Questions ต่างกันอย่างไร
หลายคนสับสนระหว่าง Indirect Question กับ Reported Question (คำถามในรูป reported speech) ทั้งสองมีโครงสร้างคล้ายกันมาก (ไม่สลับตำแหน่งประธาน-กริยา) แต่ต่างกันที่บริบทและกาล:
- Indirect Question ใช้ถามคำถามอย่างสุภาพในสถานการณ์ปัจจุบัน: "Could you tell me where she lives?"
- Reported Question ใช้เล่าคำถามที่มีคนเคยถามไปแล้ว มักมีการเปลี่ยนกาลถอยหลัง (backshift): "He asked me where she lived."
คำถามที่พบบ่อย (FAQ)
Q: Indirect Question ต้องมีเครื่องหมายคำถามไหม
A: หากประโยคทั้งหมดยังเป็นคำถามอยู่ (ขึ้นต้นด้วย Could you, Do you know) ให้ใส่เครื่องหมายคำถามท้ายประโยค แต่ถ้าขึ้นต้นด้วยประโยคบอกเล่า เช่น "I wonder if..." ไม่ต้องใส่เครื่องหมายคำถาม
Q: If กับ Whether ใช้แทนกันได้เสมอไหม
