(Backshift): "I am hungry" → He said (that) he was hungry. จุดนี้คนไทยมักลืมและพูดว่า He said that he is hungry ซึ่งผิด
กฎ Backshift พื้นฐาน (ทบทวนก่อนเข้าเรื่องขั้นสูง)
| Direct Speech | Reported Speech |
|---|---|
| Present Simple | Past Simple |
| Present Continuous | Past Continuous |
| Present Perfect | Past Perfect |
| Past Simple | Past Perfect |
| will | would |
| can | could |
| may | might |
ข้อยกเว้นของ Backshift ที่ต้องรู้ (จุดที่ตำราเบื้องต้นไม่ค่อยพูดถึง)
ข้อยกเว้นที่ 1: ความจริงสากล (Universal Truths / Facts) — ไม่ต้อง Backshift
เมื่อสิ่งที่พูดเป็นความจริงเสมอ ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงตามเวลา ไม่จำเป็นต้องถอยหลัง tense
- The teacher said (that) the sun rises in the east. (ไม่ต้องเป็น rose)
- She explained that water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
ข้อยกเว้นที่ 2: สถานการณ์ยังคงเป็นจริงในปัจจุบัน (Still True Now) — ไม่บังคับ Backshift
ถ้าสิ่งที่พูดยังคงเป็นจริง ณ เวลาที่รายงาน ผู้พูดสามารถเลือกคงเวลาปัจจุบันไว้ได้ (ไม่บังคับ แต่เป็นทางเลือก)
- He said (that) he lives in Bangkok. (= เขายังอาศัยอยู่ที่กรุงเทพฯ ตอนนี้)
เทียบกับ: He said (that) he lived in Bangkok. (= เน้นว่าเป็นข้อมูล ณ ตอนที่พูด อาจย้ายไปแล้วหรือยังอยู่ก็ได้)
ข้อยกเว้นที่ 3: Reporting Verb เป็นปัจจุบัน — ไม่ Backshift
ถ้ากริยานำ (say, tell) อยู่ใน present tense (เช่น รายงานสด ๆ ข่าว หรือแชท) ไม่ต้องถอยหลัง tense
- She says (that) she is busy right now.
- He tells me (that) he will call later.
ข้อยกเว้นที่ 4: Modal บางตัวไม่เปลี่ยนรูป
would, could, might, should, ought to, must (ในความหมายอนุมาน), needn't ไม่ต้องเปลี่ยนรูปเมื่อรายงาน
- "I might be late," she said. → She said (that) she might be late.
- "You should apologize," he said. → He said (that) I should apologize.
Reported Questions (คำถามแบบรายงาน)
กฎสำคัญ: เมื่อรายงานคำถาม ต้องเปลี่ยนโครงสร้างกลับเป็น ประโยคบอกเล่า (Statement word order) และ ห้ามใช้เครื่องหมายคำถาม
Yes/No Questions → ใช้ if/whether
Subject + asked + if/whether + Subject + Verb...
- "Are you coming?" → He asked if I was coming. (ไม่ใช่ "was I coming")
- "Do you like coffee?" → She asked whether I liked coffee.
Wh-Questions → คงคำถาม wh- ไว้ แต่กลับเป็นโครงสร้างบอกเล่า
Subject + asked + Wh-word + Subject + Verb...
- "Where do you live?" → He asked where I lived.
- "What time did the movie start?" → She asked what time the movie had started.
- "Why are you crying?" → He wanted to know why I was crying.
ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อยที่สุด: คนไทยมักคงโครงสร้างคำถาม (auxiliary + subject) ไว้ในประโยครายงาน เช่นเขียนผิดว่า He asked where did I live — ต้องแก้เป็น He asked where I lived
Reported Commands / Requests (คำสั่ง/คำขอแบบรายงาน)
ใช้ to-infinitive แทนรูปคำสั่งเดิม ไม่ใช้ that-clause
สูตร
Subject + told/asked/ordered/warned + Object + to + Verb (คำสั่งเชิงบวก)
Subject + told/asked + Object + not to + Verb (คำสั่งเชิงลบ)
- "Close the door," she said. → She told me to close the door.
- "Please don't smoke here," he said. → He asked us not to smoke there.
- "Sit down!" the teacher said. → The teacher ordered the students to sit down.
- "Don't touch that," Mom said. → Mom warned me not to touch that.
ข้อควรระวังเรื่องคำ deictic (คำที่เปลี่ยนตามบริบทเวลา/สถานที่): this → that, here → there, now → then, today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, yesterday → the day before — คนไทยมักลืมเปลี่ยนคำเหล่านี้เพราะภาษาไทยไม่มีการเปลี่ยนคำแบบนี้บังคับ
- "I will finish it tomorrow," he said. → He said he would finish it the next day.
- "I saw her here yesterday," she said. → She said she had seen her there the day before.
- จำ if/whether สำหรับ Yes/No questions: ถ้าไม่มี wh-word ให้ใช้ if หรือ whether เชื่อมประโยคเสมอ
- อย่าลืมเปลี่ยนคำ deictic: this/here/now/tomorrow ต้องเปลี่ยนเป็น that/there/then/the next day เมื่อบริบทเวลาเปลี่ยน
ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อยของคนไทย
| ผิด | ถูก | เหตุผล |
|---|---|---|
| He said that he is tired. | He said that he was tired. | ต้อง backshift present → past |
| She asked where did I go. | She asked where I went. | ต้องกลับเป็นโครงสร้างบอกเล่า ไม่ใช่คำถาม |
| He asked me do I like tea. | He asked me if I liked tea. | ต้องใช้ if/whether และ backshift |
| The teacher said that close the door. | The teacher told us to close the door. | คำสั่งต้องใช้ to-infinitive ไม่ใช่ that-clause |
| He said he will come tomorrow. (รายงานหลังจากนั้นหลายวัน) | He said he would come the next day. | ต้อง backshift will→would และเปลี่ยน tomorrow→the next day |
A: เปลี่ยนเป็นกริยา ask/request แทนคำว่า please เช่น "Please help me" → She asked me to help her.
Q: Suggest/Recommend ใช้ to-infinitive รายงานคำสั่งได้ไหม?
A: ไม่ได้ suggest/recommend มี pattern เฉพาะของตัวเอง (that + base form หรือ + gerund) ต่างจาก tell/ask/order ที่ใช้ object + to-infinitive
Q: ทำไมการเรียน reported speech ถึงสำคัญมากสำหรับคนไทย?
A: เพราะภาษาไทยไม่มีระบบ tense จึงเป็นทักษะที่ต้องฝึกฝนเป็นพิเศษ และพบบ่อยมากทั้งในข้อสอบและการสื่อสารจริง เช่น การเล่าเหตุการณ์ ข่าว หรือการทำงานที่ต้องรายงานสิ่งที่คนอื่นพูด
