Separável (transitivo) o objeto pode ficar entre o verbo e a partícula, ou depois dela turn off the light / turn the light off
Inseparável (transitivo) o objeto nunca pode ficar entre o verbo e a partícula look after the baby (nunca "look the baby after")
Intransitivo não tem objeto nenhum The plane took off. / Wake up!

Regra de ouro: pronome objeto SEMPRE separa (nos separáveis)

Esta é a regra mais importante — e a mais esquecida por brasileiros — de todo o assunto:

Estrutura:

Phrasal verb separável + SUBSTANTIVO → pode ficar antes OU depois da partícula
turn on the TV = turn the TV on

Phrasal verb separável + PRONOME → OBRIGATORIAMENTE entre o verbo e a partícula
  turn it on (correto)
  turn on it (ERRADO)

Ou seja: quando o objeto é um substantivo, você tem liberdade de escolha na ordem. Mas quando o objeto é substituído por um pronome (it, him, her, them, me, us, you), a regra deixa de ser opcional: o pronome tem que obrigatoriamente ficar entre o verbo e a partícula. Esse é, de longe, o erro mais comum e mais "denunciador" de um aluno brasileiro escrevendo ou falando inglês — dizer "turn on it", "give up it", "put on it" em vez de "turn it on", "give it up", "put it on".

Exemplos práticos com substantivo x pronome

Phrasal verb separável Com substantivo (duas ordens possíveis) Com pronome (só uma ordem possível)
turn on turn on the light / turn the light on turn it on (nunca "turn on it")
pick up pick up the kids / pick the kids up pick them up
take off take off your shoes / take your shoes off take them off
fill in/out fill in the form / fill the form in fill it in
throw away throw away the trash / throw the trash away throw it away
find out find out the truth / find the truth out find it out
put on put on your coat / put your coat on put it on
write down write down the address / write the address down write it down
call off call off the meeting / call the meeting off call it off
give back give back the money / give the money back give it back

Phrasal verbs inseparáveis: o objeto sempre depois

Nos phrasal verbs inseparáveis, tanto substantivo quanto pronome ficam sempre depois de toda a expressão — não existe a opção de intercalar:

Phrasal verb inseparável Exemplo com substantivo Exemplo com pronome
look after look after the baby look after her
look for look for the keys look for them
get over get over a problem get over it
run into run into an old friend run into him
deal with deal with the situation deal with it
come across come across an article come across it
go through go through a hard time go through it
take after take after her mother take after her

Aqui, ao contrário dos separáveis, nunca se diz "look the baby after" ou "look her after" — a partícula fica sempre grudada ao verbo, e o objeto vem depois de tudo.

Phrasal verbs de três palavras: sempre inseparáveis

Como já mencionado em preposições dependentes avançadas, os phrasal verbs formados por verbo + advérbio + preposição (look forward to, put up with, come up with, get away with) são sempre inseparáveis, e o objeto — substantivo ou pronome — vem sempre no final:

  • I'm looking forward to the trip / to it.
  • She came up with a great idea / with it.
  • He got away with the lie / with it.

Como saber se um phrasal verb é separável ou inseparável?

Infelizmente, não existe uma regra 100% previsível — essa informação precisa ser aprendida junto com o phrasal verb, geralmente indicada em dicionários de aprendizes (como o Oxford Phrasal Verbs Dictionary) com a notação "[+ obj]" ou exemplos mostrando a posição do pronome. Ainda assim, alguns padrões ajudam:

  1. Phrasal verbs formados por verbo comum + partícula única e com sentido mais literal/concreto (turn on, pick up, put on, take off) tendem a ser separáveis.
  2. Phrasal verbs com duas partículas (verbo + advérbio + preposição) são sempre inseparáveis.

  1. "Turn on it" em vez de "Turn it on" — o erro mais frequente de todos, decorrente de aplicar a ordem fixa "verbo + preposição + objeto" do português (que não separa nada) diretamente ao inglês.
  2. "Look the problem for" em vez de "Look for the problem" — tentar separar um phrasal verb que é inseparável, geralmente por analogia com outro phrasal verb (separável) aprendido antes.
  3. Esquecer que, em phrasal verbs de três palavras, nunca se separa nada: "Put it up with" é sempre errado; o correto é "put up with it".
  4. Confundir phrasal verb transitivo separável com phrasal verb + preposição dependente (que é sempre inseparável) — por exemplo, achar que "listen to" pode ser separado como "turn on" ("listen it to" está errado; o correto é "listen to it").
